Reliaguard Launches New Manufacturer Equipment Protection Program

Foothill Ranch, CA – January 23, 2018  Building on the success of their official launch in early 2016, Reliaguard’s superior portfolio of wildlife mitigation products continues to expand along with a new

Manufacturer Equipment Protection Program (MEPP).

Having a guard that’s designed to fit precise to the equipment is key, several utilities have made it very clear that today’s animal and bird guards that are currently being shipped with equipment, or being offered as an accessory, are less than adequate. These utilities have expressed their interest in seeking alternative options. MEPP is structured to provide a working relationship with the manufacturers each step of the way, developing and designing guards that will precisely fit their current equipment as well as future equipment.

According to Billy Huard, Reliaguard President, “We live in an era of high customer expectations. Huge monetary and reputation damage may be associated with outages at critical distribution facilities or on the powerline. The addition of MEPP allows us to extend our superior portfolio of wildlife mitigation products for distribution infrastructure that is at risk from outages and damage caused by wildlife contact to the market.”

In support of the MEPP launch, Reliaguard Inc is pleased to announce the hiring of Darren Barnett, a 25-year industry veteran, as VP, MEPP. Darren will be working together with equipment manufacturers, custom-designing quality Reliaguard IEEE 1656 equipment guards that protect critical assets for their loyal customers. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Reliaguard Launches New Website for Expanding Portfolio of Wildlife Mitigation Products

Foothill Ranch, CA – September 13, 2017 – Building on the success of their official launch at DistribuTECH 2016, Reliaguard’s superior portfolio of wildlife mitigation products continues to expand. In order to make the full portfolio of products available for download to the market, Reliaguard has completely redesigned their website. Enhancements include: statistics surrounding wildlife-caused outages; species most affected; product benefits; download tools; and site navigation improvements.

The hallmark of the Reliaguard family of products is the GreyEEL conductor cover and the EEL Slider installation tool. The conductor cover is available in sizes from 0.25 inch to 2 inches, in 0.25-inch increments. GreyEEL provides improved protection with a significantly overlapped seam design and material memory technology that provides exceptional closure performance. The product can be used on cables up to 20 kV, phase to ground, and has most recently been specified for retrofit by a large southern investor-owned utility as part of their vegetation management plan to protect installed cable. GreyEEL has been proven to aid in dissipating heat from cables rather than trapping it once applied, negating any further derating of conductors.

To assist linemen in their application of GreyEEL, Reliaguard developed the EEL Slider, a conductor cover application tool that streamlines installation. Ergonomically designed and easy to use, the EEL Slider optimizes safety, dexterity and the speed of applying GreyEEL. The EEL Slider is designed for use with the rubber glove work method or for de-energized installation. These complimentary products are featured on the new site along with a new product specifications sheet and installation instructions.

The Reliaguard product line stands out as superior product coverage for all types of distribution equipment, including voltage regulators, transformer bushings, lightning arresters, fused disconnect switches, pin insulators, cable terminations and cable suspension clamps. The newest product additions to the Reliaguard family include: Cross Arm Guards; and Solid Blade Disconnect Guards.

The entire product line makes use of a proprietary material called Reliatanium, which has a high dielectric rating and is UV stable. A hallmark of Reliatanium is its V-0 flammability classification for the UL 94 test standard. The result is a material that is self-extinguishing and will not burn or drip should a fault occur.

The Reliaguard product line of covers does not affect the electrical performance of the equipment on which it is installed. Reliaguard products are designed to be cost competitive for customers requiring quantity applications of a single cover type or conductor cover. Manufacturer specifications, standard design drawings and physical equipment measurements are used to make all equipment cover prototypes. The prototypes are tested for actual fit and adjusted as needed prior to manufacture of the final cover. The process can be completed in weeks.

In addition to working with customers on their specific cover-up needs, Reliaguard has also started working with electrical OEM companies to design covers that have a custom fit and are as reliable as the underlying equipment. The new website features both agents and distributors. As the company expands their partnerships and alliances, Reliaguard has set out to distinguish the company from competitors by collaborating as a team with their named agents and distributors. Brad xxx from Southern Partners states “Reliaguard was very focused on working with us as a Partner to close the business.  Their EEL Slider tool made a big difference in closing the deal along with their superior GreyEEL Conductor cover features and competitive pricing strategy.  Our business is dependent on working with quality and customer focused manufacturers and Reliaguard is ahead on both fronts.”

Prevent Outages and Improve Reliability With Reliaguard Powerline Wildlife Covers

Published in Utility Products January 2016

A common goal of every electric utility includes the delivery of safe, reliable electric service to the communities served. Unplanned outages can damage a utility’s reputation and undermine customer confidence in the provision of a reliable source of electric service.

The average cost to utility companies for recovering from animal-related outages is between $15 million and $18 million annually. This statistic that comes to us from Eaton Industries’ “Blackout Tracker, United States Annual Report 2014,” published in 2015. Up to 20 percent of all power outages in the US are attributable to bird and animal caused outages, translating to an estimated $18 billion to $30 billion dollars of lost economy yearly in the US. Protecting electrical systems equipment has both economic and environmental benefits. From a business standpoint, preventing unscheduled outages is highly cost effective. From an environmental perspective, a covered system protects both endangered and non-endangered wildlife alike.

Animal-caused Outages Make the News

Despite the fun news reporters have with creative eye-catching headlines, animal-caused outages wreak havoc. The top three industries severely hindered by downtime are data centers, financial institutions and manufacturing industries, respectively.

Widely regarded as the backbone of operations for numerous organizations across a wide spectrum of industries, data centers are mission critical. As a result, the facilities take some of the deadliest hits when it comes to downtime-from the irrecoverable loss of stored records to disruption of daily transactions. A recent Ponemon Institute study of 41 US data centers placed the price tag at more than $11,000 per minute for enterprises whose data center is core to the business, such as e-commerce companies.

There’s nothing like a blackout to bring production lines in the manufacturing industry to a grinding halt. From losses of materials to machinery breakdown to loss of production time, downtime can take a significant toll on manufacturing processes, even causing supply chains to completely collapse.

Enter Reliaguard

Drawing on his 25 years of experience in the field as a power lineman, Marty Niles started Religuard’s parent company, Cantega Technologies, in 2001. Niles witnessed animal contact over the years and saw what linemen liked and disliked, and created a product that installs quickly and doesn’t allow gaps that permit animal intrusion.

When asked about his vision, Niles said, “I saw the damage and disruption that bird and animal-caused outages caused and made it my mission to develop new products to protect utilities from animal-caused outages. Our success as a company has been built on the acceptance of our Greenjacket precise-fit cover-up for use in substations and power plants to protect against bird and animal-caused power outages. Greenjacket is the only cover-up that meets all criteria for IEEE 1656 parameters. Reliaguard extends the cover-up protection to the powerline.”

Reliaguard is staffed with a highly experienced multi-disciplinary management team and consulting team and includes power linemen, wildlife experts, polymer chemists, tool-and-die experts and polymer fabricators.

Responding to Utility Customer Needs for High Volume Applications

In response to utility customer requests for a better class of volume cover-up, and building on their superior design of animal and bird guards to prevent animal-caused outages, Reliaguard developers spent the better part of 2015 working to develop a new product line to meet this need.

Reliaguard’s Conductor Cover, GreyEEL, is sold in eight diameter sizes ranging from 1/4 inch to 2 inches.

Historically, mass produced cover-ups left gaps, nesting cavities and points of contact risk still exposed, and many of Cantega’s customers continued to have outages where mass produced cover-up had been applied. Reliaguard was developed to improve the quality of cover-up available, as requested by customers.

Reliaguard announced and unveiled the manufacture of GreyEEL Conductor Cover at the 2015 ICUEE Show in Louisville, Kentucky. Conductor cover is an important addition when installing wildlife guards because bird wingspan and animal reach from ground-to-phase or phase-to-phase contact must be factored into coverage recommendations.

Two photos of the Reliaguard Switch Cut Out Covers demonstrate Reliaguard’s ability to modify designs to suit specific customer requirements where large volumes of a single cover type are required. A properly designed cover that fits into place effectively allows utility linemen to move out of the energized work zone in a timely fashion.

In addition to providing a complete guard and conductor cover solution, the Reliaguard linemen have developed a tool for the application of GreyEEL Conductor Cover-The EEL Slider. This tool helps linemen apply conductor cover, which previously has been difficult to apply when conducting rubber glove work. The tool is designed to fit with rubber gloves or leather gloves and easily and quickly slides conductor cover into place.

A 2016 Launch of Reliaguard Parts

Reliaguard begins 2016 with the launch of its powerline wildlife covers at DistribuTECH in Orlando, Florida. Manufactured in California and produced on a volume basis, they are priced affordably for large volume purchases. Reliaguard parts are made of Reliatanium, a proprietary material. Individual parts are manufactured using injection mold and thermoform manufacturing processes, and are available for:

  • Bushings,
  • Switches,
  • Pin insulators,
  • Lightning arrestors,
  • Underground terminations, and
  • Dead-ends.
The EEL Slider allows linemen to efficiently apply GreyEEL.

Reliaguard wildlife cover-up for powerlines aims to meet IEEE 1656-2010 test parameters. Important IEEE 1656-2010 test properties include a V-0 FR rating, Wet Withstand and dielectric performance, among others. When a flashover or contact occurs, cover-up that doesn’t support combustion is important for limiting damage to critical equipment and infrastructure. Reliaguard parts are self-extinguishing and will not spread fires through dripping, an important factor in dryer states such as California. Reliaguard’s Reliatanium material used in its parts production has achieved a V-0 flammability rating, the highest flammability rating, which means it does not support combustion. In addition, the cover-ups offer product retention-they stay on the equipment, offering consistent protection and won’t split in extreme cold or heat.

Reliaguard’s initial rollout of parts is based on customer requests for better solutions for powerline protection. As customers identify additional cover-types that have volume applications, Reliaguard will add to its part inventory. Customers can meet with the Reliaguard team in booth #2608 at DistribuTECH.

About the authors: Marty Niles and Keith Yeats are linemen and founders of Reliaguard. Niles and Yeats bring a combined 60 years of field and training experience working with North American utilities. To date, they have had five patents awarded with an additional 22 patents pending, all relating to reliability solutions in the utility sector. Niles and Yeats work closely with customers and the Reliaguard design team to ensure customer considerations are contributing to Reliaguard’s powerline protection.

Reliaguard Product Line Officially Launched

Cantega Technologies has been successfully producing and selling the Greenjacket product line of custom-made, precise-fit cover-ups for substation equipment since 2005. Made using a proprietary process and materials, Greenjacket covers provide an effective solution for animal and bird contact with power equipment in the substation.

Building on the success of the Greenjacket product line, Cantega Technologies held the official launch of a new line of protective covers at DistribuTECH 2016. Billy Huard, president of the new product line coined as Reliaguard, stated, “Our customers really pushed us to get into the distribution space with custom cover-ups,” which is exactly what the Reliaguard line does. Interestingly, with nearly 500 exhibitors at DistribuTECH this year, only Reliaguard provided solutions for the prevention of power disruptions and equipment damage caused by bird, animal and reptilian equipment contact.

Reliaguard had an early release in California with a distribution emphasis about a year ago. Reliaguard’s CEO Brent Stankowski saw the niche for custom cover-ups in the U.S. and tapped plastics experts with 50-plus years of materials experience to make it happen. Reliaguard recognized there are covers available in the market, but few, if any, providers have the background learned through the successful Greenjacket experience to provide precise fit cover-up in the distribution sector.

Marty Niles, founder and president of Cantega Technologies, the parent company to Reliaguard, learned the needs of the industry the old-fashioned way. He worked in the business as a contractor and utility lineman on transmission and distribution equipment for 25 years. Marty personally witnessed the effects of bird and animal contacts to electrical equipment and saw that utilities and customers accepted such failures as unavoidable.

Billy Huard, a former professional hockey player, has been a marketing and brand manager in several industries. For more than 15 years, the friendly and outgoing former NHLer (Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars) has been honing his skills for informing and inspiring customers regarding technically advanced products. Billy brings this expertise to his present role as president of Reliaguard.

The Reliaguard product line stands out as custom product coverage for all types of distribution equipment, including voltage regulators, transformer bushings, lightning arresters, fused disconnect switches, pin insulators, cable terminations and cable suspension clamps. The latest addition to the family of covers is the GreyEEL conductor cover and the EEL Slider for installing GreyEEL covers. The conductor cover is available in sizes from 0.25 inch to 2 inches, in 0.25-inch increments. GreyEEL provides improved protection with a significantly overlapped seam design and material memory technology that exhibits exceptional closure performance. The product can be used on cables up to 20 kV, phase to ground.

The entire product line makes use of a proprietary material called Reliatanium, which has a high dielectric rating and is UV stable. A hallmark of Reliatanium is its V-0 flammability classification for the UL 94 test standard. The result is a material that is self-extinguishing and will not drip should a fault occur. While relatively new to the market, Reliaguard products are designed using the same care as the Greenjacket line of products. Contact reduction from 95% to 100% has been observed with Greenjacket users, so performance expectations are very high for applications employing the full line of Reliaguard protection.

Reliaguard is seeking IEEE 1656 certification, which the Greenjacket line has met. Installation of the products currently requires the equipment to be de-energized or installed using the rubber glove method. The EEL Slider tool allows rubber glove installation of GreyEEL conductor covers more safely than conventional methods in use for covers today. Reliaguard is working on procedures that will allow future energized installation of equipment covers with the hot-stick work method.

We live in an era of high customer expectations. Huge monetary and reputation damage may be associated with outages at critical distribution facilities or on the powerline.  Reliaguard provides a highly effective reliability improvement tool at a reasonable cost for distribution infrastructure that is at risk from outages and damage caused by wildlife contact.

Billy concludes reassuringly, “Greenjacket customers have commented that in addition to providing a superior-quality cover-up, Cantega has a reputation of being very responsive to customers with their services and design teams. Reliaguard is adopting this culture and working with customers to design powerline products that are manufactured to fit their unique equipment types. With customers ordering hundreds of covers, we want to make sure that they get the best fitting product in the market.”
